Alex Taylor (also known as azbt) was the winner of the 2023 First Graphic Novel Award with an extract from his graphic novel-in-progress, Bone Broth.

Emma Hayley, founder of SelfMadeHero, who will publish the completed book in 2025, says of Bone Broth: ‘The fun and colourful art style belies the intricate plot lines of this coming-of-age queer thriller set in a ramen shop. Crafted with vigour and spirit, the creator takes us on a somewhat crazy yet wonderful journey that is tasty from beginning to end’.

Alex is a queer visual artist based in London, working creatively through multiple mediums of expression including illustration, painting, digital art, comics, zines, and film. Alex explores identity, beauty and survival in his works, influenced by his international background, queer identities, and experiences with mental health. His pieces are as diverse in theme as they are in medium and technique. He understands art to be both a professional tool and a crutch to existing.
